Bachelor of Health Science Honours (50330)

Description: 
   A full-year honours programme is available to students who meet the admission requirements. Each honours student completes a research project under the guidance of a supervisor(s), thus gaining an insight into the process of scientific investigation while integrating knowledge learnt in the undergraduate degree.
Admission requirements: 
   A student who has successfully completed units in the Bachelor of Health Science to the value of 192 points, has attained a weighted average of at least 65 per cent in the Level 3 units of the chosen science major and the Level 3 units of the Public Health major, has passed HSMD3316 Health Industry Practicum and has gained acceptance into a school's honours programme is eligible to apply to enter the Bachelor of Health Science Honours degree.

Structure: 
   In order to undertake honours, students must consult the Sub-Dean (Health Science). Students enrol in honours units in schools that offer majors in the Bachelor of Health Science. The schools support the student and his/her research project including the provision of supervision, infrastructure and examination of the dissertation. Joint projects between schools and projects that are relevant to the health industry are encouraged. Projects in partnership with industry and with an industry co-supervisor are also encouraged. The structure and content of the dissertation should demonstrate that the student has identified a relevant problem, issue or topic, has adequately collated and integrated available information, has used appropriate methods, and has used the evidence and sound arguments to draw suitable conclusions. Schools may specify additional research-relevant requirements such as participation in journal clubs, research seminar programmes and oral presentation of the research findings.

Honours is assessed according to the regulations of the school of the primary supervisor, or by special arrangement if more than one school is involved. A student in a combined course with the Bachelor of Health Science may be allowed to enrol in honours in one degree before completion of the other degree.
