| Description | The degree of Doctor of Science is awarded for independent and original research which constitutes a substantial and distinguished contribution to the knowledge and understanding of any branch of learning with which the Faculty is concerned. The candidate's work should demonstrate a high degree of innovative thinking in the development and testing of hypotheses and new investigative procedures, and should be recognised as such by the scientific community at large. |
| Admission requirements | A qualifying period of 10 years after completion of a first degree is required. In its initial stage an application for the award of the degree is considered as a prima facie case. If such a case is established, the candidate is invited to present a submission for examination. |

| Structure | Assessment of a candidate's case is made on refereed publications including invited reviews. Abstracts, book reviews and trivial publications should not be submitted or listed. The papers presented should show clear evidence of a significant contribution towards the advancement of science. This should be reflected in the quality rather than the number of publications. |
