About this course

World populations and economies are increasing their demands for food and fibre. Agricultural systems are placed under pressure to meet environmental, social and economic goals. To maintain or increase production levels, an understanding of the complex factors that shape agricultural systems is required. This course prepares students with the knowledge and skills they need for a future in the rapidly evolving field of agricultural science.

Specialisations

Agricultural Economics

The production of food and fibre are key sectors in the Australian economy and economies worldwide. A specialisation in Agricultural Economics gives students an understanding of the economics and management of this sector and an appreciation of the agricultural system. It prepares them for a future career either as an agricultural economist or an agribusiness manager.

Animal Production

Animal production scientists enable farmers to meet the demand for animal food sources in a sustainable way by applying scientific, economic and social knowledge. A specialisation in Animal Production equips students for a career in animal production based on 'clean, green and ethical' principles.

Genetics and Breeding

Plant and animal genetics play an important role in enhancing the world's future supply of food and fibre, especially in this era of climate change. The specialisation in Genetics and Breeding is designed for students who have a broad interest in genetics and its application to either plant and animal breeding or natural resource conservation. It provides a solid grounding in the disciplines of genetics and molecular genetics and how these techniques are applied to the theory and practice of modern breeding and conservation of genetic resources.

Plant Production

Plants provide the food we eat, the oxygen we breathe and the nature we love. Plant scientists help increase agricultural productivity, maintain the biodiversity of ecosystems, and repair and rehabilitate damaged ecosystems through studying the form and function of plants from genes to ecosystems. Western Australia has thousands of endemic plant species and countless adaptations to extreme environments, which makes it an exceptional location for studying plant science.

Soil Science

Soil management is of great importance in all environments and depends on an in-depth understanding of the nature of soil and how it responds to various forms of disturbance with a view to its sustainable utilisation.
