| Structure: | | | The first year is concerned with basic science, introducing students to foundations of animal and human biology, medical chemistry, normal structure and function of the human body including elements of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, human movement and patient psychology, in units common to the medical and dental curricula. Specific podiatry units in the first two years cover the introduction of the practice of clinical podiatry, biomechanics of human gait and the pathomechanics of common foot conditions including podiatric orthopaedics or the non-surgical management of foot abnormalities, biomechanical measurement techniques, force plate measurements and video gait analysis.
The final two years of the programme concentrate on general topics relevant to podiatry including pharmacology, general medicine and surgery, general pathology, peripheral vascular disease, dermatology, rheumatology, medical imaging, geriatric medicine, orthopaedics, local and general anaesthesia. The specialised areas of podiatric medicine and surgery are dealt with in depth and include the management of the diabetic foot, sports injuries, podopaediatrics, podiatric orthopaedics and podiatric surgery. The course covers all aspects of clinical podiatry and students gain valuable practical experience treating patients in the UWA podiatry clinic, public hospitals and private practices. |
